Josh: Hello and welcome to the Epic Company Culture Podcast. My name’s Josh Sweeney and thank you for joining me on the final episode of season three, all about retention, employee retention. I am joined here by my cohost Crystal Sweeney.

Crystal: Hello everybody.

Josh: Thank you for joining us. Before we get started, I would like to thank Prototype Prime for this amazing podcasting space. For our final episode, we are gonna talk about how it’s all about the people. It’s time to get into the feelings.

Crystal: Yes.

Josh: So why don’t you kick us off.

The Ultimate Message

Crystal: It’s my favorite thing here. Can you tell? Yeah, so in trying to figure out, you know, I really wanted to relay a message to everybody that everything that we’re doing, all these podcasts that we’re doing, videos, all these shoots that we’re doing at different customer sites. Where ultimately it kind of boils down to the people.

Quality of People’s Lives

We’re talking about how to provide quality to your employees lives, which ultimately provides quality to your life, right? These people are putting in a lot of time and a lot of energy to help you pursue your dream. I think this all came around when, last Friday, when we attended an event. Do you wanna talk about the event that we attended?

The Nando Parrado Inspiration

Josh: Yeah, so the event we attended, I’ve mentioned it before where I’m in EO, Entrepreneurial Organization and one of the most highly ranked speakers is Nando Parrado. If any of you have ever seen the movie Alive, so Nando Parrado is one of the characters in the movie. He’s the real life person, real life version of I think Ethan Hawke in the movie.

Crystal: Yes.

Josh: Is that right?

Crystal: Ethan Hawke.

Josh: Alive is about the rugby team in the 70s that crashed in the Andes and had to survive for about two and a half months with pretty much, you know, nothing to survive on. They went through a lot of different challenges and ended up getting their way out of that so Nando came and spoke to the group and it was quite an amazing firsthand account of what he went through and what people were going through during those times, you know?

Starvation, avalanches, they actually had amazing amounts of luck throughout the process and just how all of that happened. I think the real takeaway from it was really all about the legacy. It was all about the legacy he was leaving and overcoming those and how that impacts everybody. Tell us a little bit about the legacy and kind of what some of your takeaways were from that.

Simply Telling His Story

Crystal: Yeah, very, very powerful presentation that he put on and he told his story and the thing that I felt was really amazing about it is he didn’t have to… it wasn’t a big, grandiose, you know, no gestures or huge presentation. He was simply telling his story. He didn’t have to add anything to it. It was amazing all in itself. Talking about surviving the crash, talking about losing family members, losing friends, you know, tragedy after tragedy and injuries and his strive to survive. Then he goes on to after he survived and basically came back from the dead. Everybody, he had saw his own obituary and he had already died once. With that, it was he just went in and just started building businesses.

He was an entrepreneur and he had talked about having several companies that he had built and he did different things and he did things that maybe he wouldn’t have done before. Which is kinda what we would expect from hearing that kinda story is he became a race car driver because he always wanted to do that. He doesn’t know if he would have done that before. Facing death it’s like, “Oh, well I’m gonna do what it is that… I’m gonna live, right?” At the end of all that when he talks about all of the great businesses, he’s like, “At the end of the day…”

It’s the Legacy

You know, he finally stopped and realized that his legacy wasn’t all of those things that he did. His legacy wasn’t this plane crash that he survived, although as miraculous and as an amazing story it was. His legacy was simply finding the girl, falling in love, having grandkids, providing grandkids to his father, who had lost his family in this crash. It was just, it was all about the people. He brought… you know, it was taking his grandson to school and just enjoying their laughter. Whereas, I know I’m guilty of it, as well. It’s like, “Oh, come on. It’s time to get up. Let’s go to school. See you later, bye.”

That’s where it kind of brought it home. Like no matter how successful you are, it comes down to the people.

It’s all about the PEOPLE

Josh: Definitely, it’s all about the people at the end of the day. I mean, I know we have people that work with us, for us, we have partners and at the end of the day they’re all going home, right? They’re all going home to spend time with their family, their kids, their spouse, their significant other and that’s really what it’s all about. A big part of what we do is really trying to change that dynamic between employees and employers so that…

People really love what they do. They wanna stay around, they have a positive impact, you know? The company they work for has a positive impact on their lives, on the lives of the people that they support when they go home at the end of the day. I know, for me, we try to look at, and I try to look at it kind of introspectively of saying, “What are the things that we’re doing to impact people in a positive way,” you know? “

Don’t Be A Jerk

As a manager of people, am I the jerk everybody knows makes it a real pain to come to work? What kind of legacy am I leaving,” right? “What kind of legacy am I leaving at the end of the day? Are people quitting because of me and my management style and how easy I am to get along with or are they striving because of what I’m doing? Am I supporting their growth? Am I supporting who they are knowing how that impacts them?”

I think that’s one thing that’s really important for all of our listeners to really think about is at the end of the day it’s about the people, right? We have to make money, we have to pay our bills, the company has to be profitable to be able to pay for payroll in the down times and all these other struggles but what’s the legacy that you’re leaving behind? In your organization alone, you know? Are you a hiring manager and you have lots of [mishires 00:07:08] because you’re not putting in the time or the effort to make sure the hiring process is right? How’s that effecting people?

Crystal: Yeah.

Culture is for the People

Josh: There’s people that are… by what we do in the organization and how we look at culture and the actions we take, are we taking people from their jobs and hiring them here and then it’s a mis-hire and then we’re causing all of this turbulence in their life? What’s our legacy as an HR person? Our legacy as a marketing person? What’s our legacy as even a front line person. Are we memorable in a positive way or a negative way?

Crystal: Yeah.

Josh: Those are some of the things I think about from a business perspective but there’s lots of other people out there that have left a legacy so what are some other legacies that you’ve seen that have just, you know, that are all about the people?

The Impacts of the Famous

Crystal: Yeah, basically in this, what we’re gonna talk about, is that you don’t realize the impact that somebody that works with you has on your life and I wanted to kind of look at a more higher level here just to sort of bring it home. I yesterday was watching this We Are The World video everybody knows. It’s all these random stars from all these different genres of music coming together as one.

Then it got me thinking about all the people that I’ve missed that, you know, that whole “gone too soon” thing. There’s some that have made an impact. I’m gonna invite our production crew, if they know some names, to throw them out.

Gone TOO Soon

People that everybody knows that, you know, they may not have made a great impact but they’ve impact your life somehow. Recently Tom Petty, right? We lost Tom Petty and I was very sad about that. Princess Diana, you know? I’m not sure what she did honestly but-

Josh: It’s a little bit before your time.

Crystal: I think she impacted, I mean, her death literally impacted the whole world.

Josh: Right.

Crystal: I always just remember watching the film, watching videos of it. Christian, yours?

Christian: Mine definitely is Robin Williams.

Crystal: Robin Williams. I really think I probably did cry when I heard that. Do you have one?

The Candy Man

Speaker 5: I’m gonna go with the candy man Gene Wilder.

Crystal: Gene Wilder.

Josh: That’s a good one.

Crystal: I didn’t even have him on my list. I love Gene Wilder. Absolutely.

Josh: Yeah.

Crystal: Do you have one… oh I’ve got another one. Go ahead.

Josh: The candy man.

Crystal: The candy man can. ‘Cause he mixes it with love.

Speaker 5: And makes the world taste good.

Crystal: And makes the world taste good.

Josh: Yeah, definitely. I’m gonna have to go with Nick Fury.

Crystal: Nick Fury.

Josh: We recently lost Nick Fury.

Nick Fury?

Crystal: I know. Super sad. Super sad. What about Paul Walker?

Josh: Paul Walker, yeah.

Crystal: Yeah.

Josh: Old time car guy, right?

Crystal: You know, I think my mother would say Karen Carpenter.

Josh: Yeah.

Crystal: She died way too… she was like, in the prime. It was so, you know, sad reasons. Henry Mosley. I’m gonna go back to like, scientists. He died in a battle very young and he was actually, his discoveries in science is where we base our periodic table off of.

Josh: Nice.

Crystal: Just FYI.

Josh: Getting all scientific on us.

Crystal: I know. Aaliyah. Do you remember Aaliyah?

Josh: I remember Aaliyah.

Crystal: When she died? Or Elvis or Ned Stark.

Josh: I’m really surprised that there’s somebody missing… Ugh, yes. Ned Stark.

Crystal: Ned Stark.

Josh: Yeah, I mean, he really lost his head.

Crystal: Oh he did.

Josh: Poor guy.

Crystal: But Joffrey got what he had coming.

RIP Dolores O’Riordan

Josh: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I’m surprised, I think you’re missing somebody on this list. A certain Irish singer.

Crystal: I don’t wanna talk about it.

Josh: Oh, okay. She was left off for a reason?

Crystal: She was left off for a reason.

Josh: Okay, okay.

Crystal: Yeah.

Josh: We won’t go there.

Crystal: No. That’s sad.

Josh: No crying on film, huh?

No Contact, Still IMPACT

Crystal: No crying on film. The whole point is these are people that literally most people have not ever had contact with, they don’t matter in a sense of them helping you. Yes, you may have watched their movies that impacted you. You may have listened to their music that impacted you. They may have impacted technology or science or math or things like that that have helped get us where we are today but I’m talking about taking those feelings and realizing how much of that, those feelings, are gonna be even more amplified with the people that you have working with you and supporting you, you know?

It’s talking about, think about those feelings that you have and how sad you were and just think about if you lost somebody like that that was working for you, just how important that they are.

Josh: Yeah, definitely.

The Purpose

Crystal: You know, their purpose. What is their purpose? What legacy are your employees gonna leave behind? Have you ever looked at somebody and said, “That person’s gonna do great things. What amazing things is that person gonna do and did I help them get there?”

Josh: Yeah when you knew you, kind of… a crucial employee was moving on.

Crystal: Yes [crosstalk 00:12:15] and then that loss that you feel. Yeah.

Josh: They really wanted to be there, right?

Crystal: Yeah, have you ever felt that? That loss?

Josh: Oh yeah, definitely. Definitely. We’ve had some of that.

Crystal: Yeah so I mean that’s the point. I think everything that we talk about is talking about your people and who are they and what legacy are they leaving? What part do you play in their legacy?

Josh: Yeah.

Crystal: You know, what part do they play in ours?

How will you be remembered?

Josh: Everybody has a legacy, right? Even in the work world, you know, each employee has a legacy. Managers have a legacy, owners. What we’d really like to have you think about in closing is what is the legacy that you’re leaving? How will you be remembered by your colleagues, by your peers, by your organization and how is that legacy really driving your company culture and the need to not only retain employees but effect change in their life and have the impact that you always wanted and you wanna be remembered by.
